Measuring your kitchen accurately is the foundation of a successful cabinet installation. Without precise measurements, you risk ordering cabinets that don’t fit or leaving gaps that ruin the look and function of your space. This guide walks you through the process of measuring your kitchen like a pro, even if you have no prior experience.

Gather Your Tools and Prepare Your Space
Before you start, make sure you have the right tools:
Tape measure (at least 25 feet)
Pencil and paper or a digital note-taking device
Level (optional but helpful)
Step stool or ladder for higher areas
Clear your countertops and remove any obstacles that might block your measurements. Turn off appliances if needed to access corners and edges.
Measure the Overall Kitchen Dimensions
Start by measuring the length and width of your kitchen. Measure from wall to wall at floor level, mid-wall, and near the ceiling to check for any irregularities. Write down all three measurements for each wall. This helps identify walls that are not perfectly straight, which affects cabinet fitting.
Measure Doors, Windows, and Appliances
Next, measure the height and width of all doors and windows. Note their distance from the floor and from adjacent walls. Also, measure the space occupied by appliances like refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers. These measurements ensure your cabinets fit around these features without blocking access.
Mark Plumbing and Electrical Locations
Identify where plumbing pipes, electrical outlets, and switches are located. Measure their distance from the floor and nearby walls. Cabinets often need to accommodate these elements, especially under sinks or near cooktops.
Measure for Base and Wall Cabinets
For base cabinets, measure the length of each wall where cabinets will go. Also, measure the height from the floor to the bottom of any windows or counters. For wall cabinets, measure the height from the countertop or base cabinets to the ceiling or soffit.
Keep in mind standard cabinet depths:
Base cabinets: usually 24 inches deep
Wall cabinets: usually 12 inches deep
Confirm these depths fit your kitchen layout.

Draw a Simple Floor Plan
Sketch a basic floor plan of your kitchen on graph paper or using a digital tool. Include all walls, doors, windows, appliances, and plumbing locations. Label each measurement clearly. This visual helps you and your cabinet supplier understand the space and avoid mistakes.
Double-Check Your Measurements
Accuracy is key. Measure each dimension twice, or have someone else verify your numbers. Small errors can lead to costly problems during installation.
